Guru Purnima Celebration

 The Spirit of Guru Purnima

Celebrating the Sacred Bond of Guidance, Gratitude, and Growth

On Thursday, 10th July, Guru Purnima was celebrated with great reverence at Anandathirtha Vidyalaya. The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Principal Dr. Geetha Shashidhar.

Shri Keshava Moorthy from the Dharmika Shikshana Department addressed the students during the morning assembly, highlighting the profound significance of Guru Purnima. He began with Guru gratitude sthotras, which were chanted in unison by all present.

He explained the meaning of the word Guru:

‘Gu’ means darkness, and ‘Ru’ means remover — thus, a Guru is one who dispels the darkness of ignorance from the lives of their disciples.

He shared that Guru Purnima is observed to offer gratitude to the first Guru, Veda Vyasa, whose birthday falls on the full moon day of Ashadha. Hence, this day is called Guru Purnima. He also gave a brief narration of Veda Vyasa’s life and his invaluable contributions to Indian scriptures and knowledge.

Shri Keshava Moorthy further explained that a Guru need not be only a spiritual master — our parents, teachers, mentors, or anyone who guides and supports us through life can be considered Gurus. Guru Purnima is a day to express deep gratitude to all such guiding forces who illuminate our path with wisdom.

He elaborated on the six noble qualities that a Guru or teacher must possess: deep knowledge, humility, compassion, honesty, a guiding spirit, and kindness. A true Guru, he said, is one who is self-realised, liberated, and wholly dedicated to God.

To help children reflect on the role of teachers, he posed thought-provoking questions — such as whether they could learn all subjects by themselves — thus highlighting the irreplaceable role of teachers in a student’s life.

All children offered home-grown flowers to the photo of Sri. Sri. Sri. Vishweshathirtha Swamiji with love and devotion, as a heartfelt gesture of respect to the revered Guru and founder of this divine institution.

The presence of the Senior Seer of Admar Mutt was the highlight of the day, making the celebration truly memorable and spiritually uplifting. The Seer spoke about Guru Purnima as a sacred occasion dedicated to teachers — a perfect day to express heartfelt gratitude.

He beautifully explained and interconnected the terms Shikshana (teaching), Shikshaka (teacher), and Shikshye (punishment), drawing a powerful example from the Mahabharata to illustrate the importance of a Guru in shaping one's character. Through this, he conveyed to the children that a teacher's punishment is never meant to harm but to guide and improve. He remarked that today's education system often lacks Shikshye, which once served as a tool for character building.

He also encouraged children to always maintain respectful behaviour towards their teachers and their first Gurus—their parents, reminding them that when respect is present, knowledge flows naturally and effortlessly.

Members of the management committee were present during Swamiji's arrival, and the entire campus was filled with a divine atmosphere — enriched by the Guru’s presence and blessings.
